Make sure your Home and Property is Fire Safe*

Picture
Any time of the year, PVE may see high temperatures. Our City is designated as a high-risk fire zone, so we are vulnerable to fires.

Our homes are such an important investment in our lives and our futures. Make time to assess your home and property and see what upgrades you might need to create a better defense against fires.

Use the tips and tools below to find out ways you can make your home and property more fire safe.

Assessing Your Property Fire Safety (from CalFire)

Creating a defensible space is the first and best opportunity to prevent flames from reaching your home. There are two levels for creating this space, based on the Cal Fire information outlined in the drawing:

  • Zone 1: Clearing debris and braches that overhang from your roof for a radius of 30 feet around your home
  • Zone 2:  Clearing grasses, brush and horizontal space between trees/shrubs for a radius of 100 feet around your home

The Cal Fire website has a quick and easy checklist to help you understand the Zones and what clearing should take place in each Zone.

Other Outdoor Fire Safety Resources & Ideas
  • Consider adding fire resistant plantings around your property to provide an extra level of fire protection.
  • For brush or dead branches on City Parklands, contact City Hall for additional assistance.
  • October is National Fire Prevention Week where we are all reminded about ways we can make our homes and properties fire safe.

Upgrading Your Home’s Fire Safety

There have been a number of innovations in products that can protect your home from fire.  Embers from nearby fires can cause problems on your roof or in your ventilation system. Roof venting products can be installed or applied to stop the issues that can happen.

Southern California Radio Host, Builder and Designer, Dean Sharp, does an annual broadcast that shares the latest in fire prevention products for your home. Many of these products are easy to implement and invisible to see.

Find out more about 2020 products and listen to the podcast here.  More recent podcasts on fire prevention, earthquake preparedness,  drought resistant planting strategies and more can be found here.
