Get Ready for Rain
Weather professionals are forecasting heavy rains for this Fall, 2023. El Nino is predicted to be in our area and may be one of the strongest that we have known.
It’s a good time to assess your home, property and emergency kit to ensure that you are ahead of the game – before the rains come.
Here is a checklist of things to consider and plan to take action:

Your Home
- Verify your roof is ready for rains – fix leaks that you experienced from last year’s storms
- Clean gutters of leaves and debris – ensure smooth flow
- Consider collecting rainwater from roof through a water collection system
- Address puddling or water issues from last year’s storms
- Make sure water is flowing away from your property to protect your building
- Plant ground cover on hillsides and bare areas to reduce erosion
- Place sandbags (sand and bags available at Fire Department next to the PVE PD at the PVE Fire Station) or a product like Quick Dam flood bags or flood barriers (found at home improvement stores) in areas that are prone to water flow or flooding
- Make sure you have 1 or 2 alternate evacuation options if you had to leave your home in an emergency
- Sign up for AlertSouthBay.com to get emergency notifications.
- Make sure you and your family Know Your Zone number for your home, school and work
- Ensure you have food, water and medications for you, your family and pets for 3 – 5 days
- Make sure you have an alternate power solution in preparation of possible power outages
