10 Tips for Backyard Safety

Some of our properties are large and have nooks and crannies that can be places for people or animals to hide or enter and present a safety or security issue.  We may not always think about our backyard and security during the day or night.

PVE Neighborhood Watch and our PVE PD encourage you to take steps for backyard safety by slowing down potential burglars who are looking for crimes of opportunity. Eliminate easy entrances and exits to your property and make sure your home is not “attractive” to unwanted visitors in the day or night.

  1. Make sure doors are closed and locked, even when you are inside--even locked screen can prevent free access into your home
  2. Lock back and side yard gates with a padlock
  3. Lock backyard sheds
  4. Put away ladders and other tools that could be used to access your home
  5. Have backyard motion sensors, lights, alarms and/or security cameras activated at night
  6. Have lights for doorways, driveways, porch areas and other dark areas to check on nighttime noises
  7. Trim bushes & shrubs below window height to prevent a burglary from using them for concealment
  8. Padlock electrical service panel to protect from unwanted access
  9. Prevent second story or roof access via trees, trellis, fence/wall or unsecured ladder
  10. Lock upstairs windows and balcony doors
