Home burglaries, car break-ins and mail/package theft continue to be common crimes in PVE. Many people ask what is the best security system to use. That is not a simple answer, since there are a number of factors to consider.
Leverage the tools, links and videos below to help you get started. If you have experiences to share about setting up your system, please email us. We would like to build up our toolkit to help other residents.
Beginning Your Security System Selection or Enhancement
Your security solution will most likely include a variety of tools. It will probably include cameras and alarms. You may also want include visual indicators such as timed lights, dog water bowls or men’s shoes to suggest additional forms of “security” that may be on your property.
In selecting alarms, do you want an alarm company or a “do it yourself” system? You may also strongly consider including glass break sensors and/or motion detectors since PVE PD indicates most break-ins are through glass and not by opening a door or window to trigger an alarm.
There are new innovations in alarms, too, such as mailbox cameras to indicate activity at your mailbox or home drones that monitor activity in your house.
Having a security system to protect your home, car and property also have additional considerations. If you use a system that depends on the internet, loss of power or internet will disable your security system. With some security solutions, you are providing key data to large internet companies and you may want to verify that your information is secure.
Selecting a security system for your home is not a one-size-fits-all solution. You will need to do some homework to determine your needs, budget and abilities to install and maintain.
Remember, no security system will work if it isn’t turned on.
Burglaries can occur when you’ve just gone out for a quick errand.
A good way to start to evaluate your current system or prepare for a new system is to use a Home Security Assessment Checklist (Burglary Prevention Checklist for Homes) provided by our PVE PD.

In March 2022, there was a PVE Neighborhood Watch meeting in Lunada Bay. These neighbors were able to discuss options and share information. The presentation is for your reference to use as a tool to help you decide which system or combination of systems is right for you.
If you are interested in having a Block Meeting and discussing this topic, please contact your Area Coordinator to schedule a meeting. The session can be via Zoom or in person. Your Area Coordinator can help with the details and coordinate with the PVE PD to see if an officer can be in attendance.
