window & door safety while your home and away - Keep unwanted guests out

Good weather and people vacationing can create a rise in break-ins. With the increase in coyote sightings and lost peacocks, an open door or window is an entry point for unwanted animals, as well. There has even been a reported crime of a stranger going into a side door and eating food out of the fridge only to be encountered by the resident.

Whether you’re away for a few days, a few minutes or staying at home, here are actions you can take to protect yourself, your family and your home from intruders of all kinds.

  1. Close and lock windows and doors when you’re away or when you're at home.
  2. Install safety locks or security screens if you are leaving windows or doors partially open.
  3. Set your alarm and video cameras whenever you leave.
  4. Lock your car and close the windows; remove valuables and keep “interesting items” from sight.
  5. Keep your garage door closed when you are not working inside it.
